In each tender document, you will find ‘mandatory information’ that you have to complete as part of your proposal. If you are unable to provide this information, your proposal will not be evaluated.

This includes the following information:

• Business name
• Business number and/or ACN
• Business address and contact details
• Accreditation and or license information
• Insurance details (public liability and workers comp).

It is strongly recommended that you have a registered business with the  relevant licenses and insurances to operate otherwise your tender will not be evaluated. 

You may also be required to supply financial information about your business, including bank statements. 

This is to show the client you have the necessary cash flow to support the contract delivery should you be successful.

All tenders will ask you a range of questions covering key areas of your business, and past experience and performance.

Most tenders will ask you for at least two previous projects you have delivered that is similar to the one you are going for. Often you will have to supply a referee contact from these contracts or projects.

For example, if you are going to tender for a plumbing contract, you will score better marks if you can show you have successfully delivered other similar plumbing contracts. If you have no prior experience in delivering plumbing services and/or cannot provide any similar contracts, you will likely not score top marks. 

It is really important to consider that your company has experience and performance it can draw on to show that it is a low risk supplier.

For most tenders with the exception of Expression of Interests (EOIs), you will be required to submit a price with your final submission.

This price represents the cost to provide the goods or services as stipulated in the tender document, as well as any contingencies and profit margins.

The lowest price doesn't mean you win the tender. In fact, many government agencies will put a weighting on the price compared to the 'non' price elements. The price component might be worth 40/100 and the non-price components might be 60/100.

It is important that you are able to understand the market and know what a competitive price is for the product or service you are selling.

One of the biggest risks of going in too low on price means you might lose money on the contract if you win. 

It is also important that you can communicate the 'value' in terms of what the client will get for their money, including value in meeting or exceeding the tender requirements.

The pricing and the non-price requirements are required to be sent back to the client, most often electronically. 

The client will stipulate the format for which you are to provide your tender submission.

There is a best practice standard of presentation that is considered 'professional' in terms of ensuring the document: 

• Reads well
• Has all the required information
• Includes  attachments
• Formatted well 
• Submitted on time.  

This takes time, skills and resources to do so and a dedicated focus and process to achieve the best quality response by the deadline.
